Jesus, I hate Faulkner. Does your student write in stream of consciousness? I would give him a big fat F. One of my students yesterday just made up words because they didn't study for the quiz...that was funny. He got a 0, but it was still funny.
No, but he does write long and convoluted sentences with about 20 clauses, all of which read something like "O, tis true I engaged in such boyhood follies, but only occasionally, and only...."
I'm with Erica on this one. I think you have to at the very least earn the right to be pretentious. At the freshman level it's a bit uncalled for. He's testing you.
Don't worry -- I know. He got "check minus" in every category when I evaluated the rough draft of his last paper. He skipped the next class after that, I suppose because his pride was so wounded. But...he came back (late for class, even) and stayed after during the next class period to talk about...creative writing workshops. It was odd.
The 17 Bottles Of project began with Urs and Sig and a bunch of other people in 1999. Unfortunately, the original, in a blue spiral notebook, has vanished. It was a fun project, though, so we're starting over. Hopefully this one will be a bit harder to misplace.
2011 UPDATE: Word on the streets is that the J.Mo. has located the notebook and has it in her possession. We'd love to see it some day...
